With a population of 76 million and no qualified Optometrists and only a handful of Physiotherapists, very few people have access to even the most basic eye care and rehabilitation services. Over a million people suffer from easily preventable blindness due to Cataract, Trachoma, Glaucoma or simply the need of glasses. Many people have life long disabilities due an absence of Physiotherapy after e.g. major surgery, traumatic accidents or being born with congenital diseases. After working at Gondar University Hospital for a year, it was clear to us that there was still a great lack of infrastructure and funds much needed to secure the survival of the young Optometry and Physiotherapy departments.
